Soluble silicates are used in potable as well as industrial water for inhibiting corrosion of various metals--iron, lead, copper and zinc, among others. Soluble silicates inhibit corrosion by forming a protective film on metal surfaces that isolates the metal from further corrosive attack. As alkaline chemicals moreover, silicates raise the pH of water and thereby provide the further benefit of decreasing the water's corrosivity.
Soluble silicates are used in groundwater systems to sequester iron and manganese, and thereby prevent colored water in distribution systems. An economical alternative to removal plants, silicates also do away with the need for sludge disposal.
Activated silica can be used as a coagulation aid in the coagulation and flocculation process to create a heavier floc that settles faster. This can contribute to lower turbidities and longer filter runs. Activated silica is made on-site by acidifying and then diluting N sodium silicate.
Magnesium sulfate can be used in the treatment of water and wastewater to reduce Total Dissolved Solids (TDS.)
